What Height Step or Threshold Will This Ramp Suit?

This is a threshold ramp, designed for low rises rather than full steps. Across the range it suits rises from around 2.5cm up to 7.5cm, depending on the size you choose. The longer the ramp, the higher the rise it handles and the gentler the slope.

As a guide, here is what those heights typically look like around the home:

• 1cm to 2cm: Sliding door tracks, internal door trims, carpet-to-tile transitions.
• 2cm to 4cm: Standard front door sills and patio door thresholds.
• 4cm to 7.5cm: Raised timber thresholds, shallow paving lips, low garage entries.
• Over 7.5cm: A full step or kerb. A threshold ramp is not suitable here. You will need a folding or modular ramp instead. Please contact us and we will point you to the right product.

How to Measure Your Threshold

Five minutes with a tape measure now will make sure you order the right size first time.

1. Measure the rise. Rest your tape on the ground at the base of the threshold and measure straight up to the highest point of the lip. This is the single most important number. If the ground slopes away, measure from the lowest point the ramp will sit on.
2. Measure the opening width. Measure across the doorway at its narrowest point, usually between the door stops rather than the outer frame. Your ramp should be no wider than this opening.
3. Check the door swing. If the door opens over the ramp, open it fully and check there is clearance above the ramp surface. Our low-profile design allows most doors to swing freely, but it is worth confirming.
4. Check the run-off space. Measure the flat, level ground in front of the threshold. You need at least the full length of the ramp, plus room to line up and approach it straight on.
5. Check the surface. The ramp needs firm, level ground at the base. Soft soil, loose gravel or a sloping path will need levelling first.

Once you have your rise and width, match them against the table below. If your rise falls between two sizes, choose the longer ramp. A gentler gradient is always easier and safer, particularly for self-propelling manual wheelchair users and heavier powerchairs.
