The Cobalt Mattress Underlay is a 5cm medium-density foam base that goes under an alternating air overlay or air mattress. It gives the air system something firm to sit on, and because it's much thinner than a standard mattress, it keeps the bed surface low.

Why Use an Underlay Instead of a Mattress

Air overlays are often laid on top of an ordinary foam mattress. That stacks two layers together and can leave the sleeping surface much higher than the bed was designed for, which makes getting in and out harder and puts the top of the bed rails closer to the mattress. Swapping the full mattress for this 5cm underlay brings the height back down.

It also adds support under the air cells. If the power goes out, the system develops a fault, or the backrest is raised for a long time, the foam stops the air mattress from "bottoming out" onto the bed base.

Good to know before you order:

• It's not a mattress. Don't lie directly on the underlay; always use it with an air overlay or air mattress on top.
• The weight it supports is set by the air mattress you put on it. Check the safe working load of your air system.
• Match the underlay size to your air mattress and bed: single is 88cm wide, king single is 105cm wide.
