The Comfort Cool Thumb CMC Abduction Splint from North Coast Medical is a soft wrap-around support for the thumb CMC joint, the joint at the base of the thumb. It's the same wrap as the Comfort Cool CMC Restriction Splint with one addition: a firm, mouldable thermoplastic insert inside the thumb strap. The strap holds the first metacarpal out from the palm and opens the thumb web space. Your fingers keep full movement. It comes in small, medium and large, for the left or right hand.

Shaped to the hand it's on

Warm the thumb strap in the microwave and the insert softens, so it can be moulded along the crease at the base of the thumb (the thenar eminence). Once it cools it holds that shape, giving firm support right where the thumb meets the palm. The rest of the splint is soft, latex-free material. Hand wash it and let it air dry.

What's in the Comfort Cool Thumb CMC Abduction Splint

A soft wrap goes around the hand and wrist, and a separate thumb strap wraps around the thumb and fastens back onto the wrap. The mouldable insert sits inside that thumb strap.

Is it right for you?

• Usually suits: North Coast Medical lists thumb deformity and contractures from neurological conditions, median nerve injuries or arthritis, especially where the thumb is held in against the palm.
• Fitting: the insert is moulded with heat, so it's best shaped by a hand therapist the first time.
• Latex: not made with natural rubber latex.

Choosing the right size and side

North Coast Medical sizes it by one measurement: the MP circumference, around the hand at the big knuckles.

1. Measure: wrap a soft tape around the hand at the big knuckles, snug but not tight, and note it in cm.
2. Read the table: match the measurement to Small, Medium or Large.
3. Right on a boundary? Small and Medium share 18cm, and Medium and Large share 20cm. Email us the measurement and we'll help you choose.
4. Choose the side: order Left for the left thumb and Right for the right thumb.
