What Length Do I Need?

This is a step ramp. It lays over one or more steps, a kerb, or a vehicle tailgate, and the length you need depends entirely on how high you are climbing.

Every size covers the same 74cm width and carries the same 272kg. The only thing length changes is how steep the climb feels, and that is the single thing that decides whether this ramp works for you. Too short for the step and the ramp becomes a slope nobody can safely push up or ride down.

Two gradients matter, and both come from the Australian Standard for access and mobility, AS 1428.1:

• 1:14 (gentle). The standard's gradient for any rise over 190mm, and the only one that suits someone propelling a manual wheelchair themselves or using the ramp unaccompanied. Every 14cm of ramp length buys 1cm of step height.
• 1:8 (steep, with a helper). Suits a powered wheelchair, a mobility scooter, a walker, or a manual chair with someone assisting. This is as steep as a portable ramp should ever be used with someone on board.

If you are choosing between two lengths, always take the longer one. A ramp that is gentler than you strictly need costs you a little more floor space and nothing else.

How to Measure Before You Buy

1. Measure the total rise. Rest a tape measure on the ground at the bottom and measure straight up to the surface you want to reach. Measure the whole climb in one go, not each step separately. Three steps of 15cm is a 45cm rise, not a 15cm one.
2. Check the landing at the top. You need a flat area at least as deep as your wheelchair or scooter is long, so you can come off the ramp and stop before opening a door.
3. Measure the run-out space at the bottom. Pace out the ramp length from the base of the step and check nothing is in the way: a car, a garden bed, a fence, a path that turns sharply.
4. Measure your device width. Measure across the widest point, usually the wheels or the armrests. The ramp is 74cm wide overall, and the raised side edges sit inside that, so leave yourself room to steer.
5. Check the ground at both ends. Soft lawn, loose gravel, or a driveway that slopes away from the step will change how the ramp sits. It needs firm, level footing top and bottom.

Once you have your total rise, find it in the table below and pick the shortest ramp that covers it in the column that matches how the ramp will be used. If you fall between two sizes, size up.

Aluminium Disability Ramp Specifications

All six sizes are 74.3cm wide (74cm on the 61cm model), have 5cm raised side edges, and are rated to a Safe Working Load of 272kg in high-grade aluminium.

The 61cm RIST1915 is wider than it is long. It is a kerb and single-low-step ramp, not a stair ramp.

One note on the 1:8 column: AS 1428.1 only allows a 1:8 gradient up to a 190mm rise. Above that the standard asks for 1:14. So beyond about 19cm, treat the 1:8 figures as the practical limit for an assisted portable ramp rather than a standards-compliant one, and talk to us first.

Note on step-height figures: the two maximum step columns are calculated from the ramp length at 1:14 and 1:8 and rounded down. They are not stated by the manufacturer. The lengths, 74.3cm width, 5cm side edge height, weights, and Safe Working Load are the manufacturer's own figures. The manufacturer notes that specifications can vary by up to 10 per cent.
