Slim, washable support for the base of the thumb: the Push ortho Thumb Brace CMC
The Push ortho Thumb Brace CMC is a slim, compact brace that stabilises the basal joint of the thumb (CMC-1) and holds the thumb's metacarpal in a functional position. It leaves the wrist and the MCP-1 joint free, so the rest of the hand can keep working. Push developed it for CMC-1 osteoarthritis, CMC-1 instability and stabilisation after CMC-1 surgery. It comes in left and right, Sizes 1 to 3.
Keep using your hand, even in water
Washing up, showering and handwashing happen all day, and a fabric brace that has to come off each time soon ends up in a drawer. The Push CMC can be worn in water: let it dry afterwards and put it back on. The synthetic material is antibacterial, and the brace goes in the washing machine at 40°C.
Comfortable and easy to put on
Push uses selected materials and rounded edges for comfort. Two straps close it, so you can put it on yourself with no fuss: slide it down to the base of the thumb, close the strap nearest the wrist first, then the upper strap.
What's in the Push ortho Thumb Brace CMC
The brace is a polyurethane shell around an aluminium core, with two hook and loop straps.
- Aluminium core. It sits closely around the thumb. Your therapist or the fitter can reshape it so it fits your thumb exactly.
- Thumb shell. It wraps the base of the thumb and keeps the thumb arc stable while you use the hand.
- Two straps. A lower strap near the wrist and an upper strap, both with hook and loop fasteners.
- Antibacterial synthetic. It can get wet and is easy to wash.
Features
- Stabilises the CMC-1 joint and places the thumb in a functional position.
- Wrist and MCP-1 joint left free, so the hand keeps its movement.

- Antibacterial material, machine washable at 40°C on a delicate cycle.
- Reshapable aluminium core for a close, individual fit.

Is the Push ortho Thumb Brace CMC right for you?
A diagnosis comes first. Push says to always check with your GP, a physiotherapist or a specialist before you start wearing the brace.
- Usually suits: CMC-1 osteoarthritis, instability of the CMC-1 joint, and stabilisation of the CMC-1 joint after surgery.
- Not suitable with: Push lists no known conditions where the brace can't be worn.
- Poor circulation: a brace can cause a build-up of blood in the limb, so don't do it up too tightly.
- Skin: wear it on undamaged skin. Cover any damaged skin with a suitable dressing first.
- Latex: the brace is latex free.
If the pain persists or symptoms get worse, talk to your doctor or therapist. After thumb surgery, follow your surgeon or hand therapist's advice on when to start wearing it.
Choosing the right size and side
Push sizes the brace by the circumference of the hand, measured around the palm as shown in the chart. Sizes are the same for left and right.
- Measure: wrap a soft tape around the palm, as in the chart, and note it in cm.
- Read the chart: find the size that covers your measurement.
- Between sizes or on the edge of a range? Email us the measurement and we'll help you choose. Push recommends trying the brace on to check the size.
- Choose the side: Left for the left hand, Right for the right hand.
Push also makes a Size 0 (15-17.5cm), which we don't stock. If your measurement is under 17.5cm, email us before you order.
