Rest the hand in a natural position: the Rolyan Carve-It Hand Positioning Orthosis

The Rolyan Carve-It Hand Positioning Orthosis is a shaped foam hand roll for people with mild to moderate finger spasticity. Its foam shape follows the natural arches of the hand, which a traditional hand cone doesn't. The flat bottom makes the hand easy to position. It holds the fingers open in a relaxed, supported position. It fits the left or right hand, in two sizes.

A steady, comfortable resting position

The hand rests on the curved top with the fingers wrapped gently around the foam, higher on the thumb side and lower on the little finger side. A long strap crosses the back of the wrist in a figure 8 and fastens with a short hook strap. The flat base sits steady on a mattress, lap tray or arm tray.

Carve it to fit

If the shape needs changing, take the cover off and trim the foam with an electric knife. The long strap can be trimmed too, but not the short one.

What's in the Rolyan Carve-It Hand Positioning Orthosis

  • Foam splint. Shaped to follow the distal transverse arch of the hand, with a flat base.
  • Removable cover. Hand wash it in warm water and air dry.
  • Two straps. A long tan loop strap and a short hook strap that fasten in a figure 8 over the wrist.

Features

  • Follows the arches of the hand, unlike a traditional hand cone.
  • Flat bottom for easy positioning in bed or on a lap tray or arm tray.
  • Trimmable foam, shaped with an electric knife for a custom fit.
  • Figure-8 strap with adjustable tension.
  • Removable, washable cover.
  • Left or right hand, in two sizes.

Is the Rolyan Carve-It right for you?

A healthcare professional should fit it the first time and give wearing instructions. This is Rolyan's general guide.

  • Usually suits: mild to moderate hypertonicity, where a therapist wants the fingers held open in a relaxed position.
  • Usually not suitable with: severe spasticity, or skin breakdown on the hand.
  • Straps: don't do them up so tight that they interfere with circulation.
  • Stop using it and see a healthcare professional if unusual swelling, skin discolouration or discomfort occurs.

Talk to your therapist about fitting, wearing time and how to check the skin.

Choosing the right size

Rolyan sizes the Carve-It by the width across the 2nd to 5th MCP joints (the big knuckles from the index finger to the little finger). Measure the hand resting as flat as it comfortably goes, or ask your therapist to measure.

  1. Measure the knuckle width (A). Measure straight across the back of the hand at the big knuckles, from the index finger knuckle to the little finger knuckle. You only need measurement A.
  2. Pick the size. Up to 7.6cm is S/M. Over 7.6cm is L/XL.
  3. Right on 7.6cm? Email us and we'll check it with you.
  4. Either hand. The same orthosis fits the left or right hand.
Size Knuckle width Hand
S/M Up to 7.6cm Left or right
L/XL Over 7.6cm Left or right
