Spring-assisted PIP extension with the Rolyan Sof-Stretch Capener Splint

The Rolyan Sof-Stretch Coil Extension Splint (Capener) uses coil springs placed beside the PIP joint that move with the joint to help increase PIP extension. Rolyan made it to help reduce tightness in the PIP joint and surrounding soft tissue from flexor tendon tightness, flexion contractures and boutonniere deformity.

Why You'll Love The Rolyan Sof-Stretch Coil Extension Splint

  1. Moves with the finger. The coil springs move with the joint, and the splint does not shift position as the finger moves.
  2. Even pressure. Contoured pads at each end spread pressure evenly.
  3. Best for elastic contractures. It is best suited for contractures up to 45 degrees that feel elastic when stretched.
  4. Easy care. Hand wash and air dry. Latex free.

Your day, with the Rolyan Sof-Stretch Coil Extension Splint

Stiff fingers make small jobs harder, from buttons to gripping a pen. The Sof-Stretch sits on the finger and its coil springs work to help increase extension while you go about your day, and it stays in place as you move. Your hand therapist can tell you how long and how often to wear it.

The Rolyan Sof-Stretch Coil Extension Splint in a nutshell

  1. Lateral coil springs: sit beside the PIP joint and move with it.
  2. Contoured proximal and distal pads: spread pressure evenly.
  3. Standard width: four sizes, Small to X-Large.
  4. Sizing: with the finger straight, measure the same finger on the unaffected hand from the distal palmar crease to the distal finger crease.

Choosing the right size

Size is set by finger length, measured on the matching finger of the other hand.

  1. Use the unaffected hand. Measure the same finger on the other hand, held straight.
  2. Measure the length. Go from the distal palmar crease (where the finger meets the palm) to the distal finger crease (the crease at the last joint).
  3. Email us the measurement. Performance Health doesn't list a length range for each size, so send us the measurement in cm and we'll confirm Small, Medium, Large or X-Large.

Is it the right Capener splint for you?

  • A good fit: PIP joint tightness from flexor tendon tightness, flexion contractures or boutonniere deformity, where the contracture is up to 45 degrees and feels elastic when stretched.
  • Check with your therapist first: if the joint feels stiff rather than elastic when stretched, or the bend is more than 45 degrees.
  • Also consider: the Rolyan Sof-Stretch Extension Splints, which use adjustable wires instead of coil springs.

Every hand, wrist and injury is different, so we recommend speaking with your healthcare provider or hand therapist about whether this is the right support for you and how long to wear it.
