A resting hand splint that moves with the hand: SaeboStretch

The SaeboStretch is a dynamic resting hand splint from Saebo. It's made for people with a neurological injury, such as a stroke, head injury or spinal cord injury. It holds the wrist, hand and fingers in a set resting position, but still lets the fingers move when tone pulls them closed. It comes in Small, Medium and Large, for the left or right hand, with three hand plates in the box.

A stretch that gives a little, then holds

A traditional hard static splint holds the hand rigid, even when tone pulls the fingers closed. The SaeboStretch is different. Its energy-storing hand plate lets the fingers bend with that pull. Once the hand relaxes, the fingers ease back to the resting position. Saebo says this makes a long, steady stretch more comfortable, so it's easier to keep wearing.

Holds its place, comes off for cleaning

Elastic non-slip straps are sewn to the cover so they stay where they should and the splint is easier to put on. Non-slip gel on the hand and thumb stops it sliding out of position. The cover unzips for washing or for swapping hand plates.

What's in the SaeboStretch

Interchangeable. Three energy-storing hand plates come in the box, to suit different levels of spasticity. A therapist picks the one that fits the hand and swaps it as needs change.

Adjustable. The wrist and thumb mount can be bent to fine-tune the fit, and the thumb system adjusts for palmar and radial abduction and adduction.

Features

  • Patented stretch technology with three interchangeable energy-storing hand plates.
  • Strapping system at key points of the hand to hold the fingers in position and give a close fit.
  • Malleable wrist and thumb mount so the fit can be customised.
  • Adjustable thumb system for palmar and radial abduction and adduction.
  • Padding under the palm to help keep the palmar arch in shape.
  • Non-slip cover, straps and gel to keep the fingers where they should be.
  • Zip-off cover for cleaning and changing hand plates.
  • Standard cross-head screws in place of the old small hex screws.

Saebo's own videos show the splint, how to put it on, and what comes in the box.

Is the SaeboStretch right for you?

Saebo says the SaeboStretch must be fitted by a therapist or orthotist, so they should check the hand first. Here's the general guide from Saebo.

  • Usually suits: people after a neurological injury such as a stroke, head injury or spinal cord injury, with minimum to moderate tone and soft tissue shortening. The person should have moderate stiffness or less and be able to open the hand completely flat, with the wrist at neutral, with help.
  • Usually not suitable with: severe tone or contractures, severe joint deformities of the hand, severe tightness in the hand and wrist, severe swelling in the hand or wrist, or open wounds or fragile skin.
  • Fitting: a therapist or orthotist needs to fit it and choose the hand plate.

Choosing the right size and hand

Size is set by the width across the fingers just below the middle knuckles. Watch Saebo's short measuring video first, or ask your therapist to measure.

  1. Measure the finger width. With the fingers held together, measure across the index to little finger (fingers 2 to 5) just below the middle knuckles (the PIP joints). Measure across the back of the fingers only; don't wrap the tape down the sides of the hand.
  2. Email us the measurement. Performance Health doesn't publish a cm range for Small, Medium and Large, so send us the measurement in cm and we'll confirm the size.
  3. Between two sizes? Look at finger length. Saebo says shorter fingers suit the smaller size.
  4. Choose the hand. Order Left for the left hand and Right for the right hand.

Email support@mobilityshopdirect.com.au with the answers below. We'll check them and come back to you with the right splint, or a better match if this one isn't it.

  1. Which hand is it for, left or right?
  2. What is the width across fingers 2 to 5, just below the middle knuckles, in cm? Are the fingers short or long for the hand?
  3. Can the hand be opened completely flat, with the wrist straight, with help?
  4. How strong is the tone or tightness in the hand: mild, moderate or severe?
  5. Is there swelling, a joint deformity, or any open wound or fragile skin on the hand or wrist?
  6. Who will fit it: a therapist or orthotist? And do you need it by a set date?
