Types of Electric Adjustable Beds
If you are looking for an adjustable bed for elderly Australia options, the range can feel a little overwhelming at first. Here is a plain guide to the three main types so you can find the right fit.
Profiling Beds (Head and Leg Raise)
A profiling bed uses one or more motors to raise and lower the head section, the leg section, or both. This lets you find a comfortable sleeping or resting position without needing extra pillows or help from someone else. Profiling beds are popular for people who spend time in bed during the day, those recovering from surgery, or anyone who finds getting comfortable at night more difficult than it used to be.
Key things to check: the number of motors (a dual-motor bed moves the head and legs independently), the remote control size and simplicity, and whether the bed height suits transfers.
Hi Lo Beds (Height-Adjustable)
A hi lo bed changes the height of the entire bed frame at the touch of a button. Lower it close to the floor for safe, easy entry and exit. Raise it so a carer can assist comfortably without bending. Hi lo beds are particularly useful after a hip or knee replacement, or when a carer is helping with transfers and personal care.
Most hi lo beds adjust from roughly 35 cm to 75 cm in height. Check the specific range for the model you are considering.
Combination Profiling and Hi Lo Beds
Many of the beds in our range combine both features: they raise the head and legs for positioning, and also lower and raise the overall bed height. A combination bed gives you the most flexibility and is often the preferred recommendation from occupational therapists for home care use.

How to Choose the Right Adjustable Bed
Here is what to look for before you choose.
Mattress Compatibility
Not every mattress works with an electric adjustable base. You need a flexible mattress such as a foam, latex, or flexible pocket spring option. A standard innerspring mattress will not bend and could be damaged. Many beds in our range are available with a suitable mattress included, which removes the guesswork. If you already have a mattress, check the product description or call us and we will confirm compatibility.
Weight Capacity and Bed Size
Standard electric adjustable beds are typically rated to 120-150 kg. Bariatric models rated to 200 kg or more are also available. Check the product specification and choose a model rated above your actual weight for a comfortable safety margin. Beds are available in single, king single, and occasionally double configurations. King single is the most common choice for home care use as it gives more room than a standard single.
Funding Options (NDIS, Home Care Package, DVA)
Electric adjustable beds are classified as assistive technology and may be covered by a Home Care Package (Level 2 and above), an NDIS plan, or DVA funding for eligible veterans. Your occupational therapist (OT) or care coordinator can confirm eligibility and provide a supporting recommendation. We can supply quotes and product specifications to support your funding application. Read our NDIS FAQ for more detail, or give us a call and we will walk you through it.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a profiling bed and a hi lo bed?
A profiling bed raises and lowers the head and leg sections to adjust your position while lying down. A hi lo bed changes the overall height of the bed frame to make getting in and out easier. Many electric beds combine both functions in a single unit. See our guide on types of electric beds for a full breakdown.
What mattress works with an electric adjustable bed?
You need a flexible mattress designed for adjustable bases, such as a foam, latex, or pocket spring mattress with a flexible core. A standard innerspring mattress will not bend with the bed. Many adjustable beds are sold with a compatible mattress included. Browse our electric bed mattresses collection.
What weight capacity should I look for in an electric adjustable bed?
Most standard electric adjustable beds are rated to around 120-150 kg. Bariatric models are available with ratings from 200 kg upward. Always check the individual product specification and, if in doubt, choose the next weight rating up. We are happy to help you work out the right option.
Can I fund an electric adjustable bed through NDIS or a Home Care Package?
Yes, in many cases. A Home Care Package (Level 2 and above) can cover beds classified as assistive technology. NDIS participants may also be eligible depending on their plan and support goals. DVA may also assist eligible veterans. Your occupational therapist or care coordinator can confirm eligibility. We can supply quotes to support your application. Learn more about funding options.
