Does NDIS Cover a Sheepskin Rug? How to Claim One

Yes, the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) can fund a sheepskin rug in the right circumstances. A medical sheepskin used for pressure care or skin protection is a recognised assistive aid, and many participants miss out simply because they never ask. This guide walks through which NDIS support categories apply, how to claim, and what to try if your claim is knocked back.

Which NDIS support categories cover a sheepskin rug

A medical sheepskin rug can sit in one of two budget categories, depending on how it is used and how your plan is structured.

Consumables (Core Supports)

Consumables is the most common pathway. It is part of your Core Supports budget and covers everyday items used to manage a disability, including pressure care products. A sheepskin rug used for skin protection or comfort tends to sit here. The Consumables budget is generally the most flexible part of a plan, which makes this the easier route for a low-cost item.

Assistive Technology (Low Cost AT)

If your plan has an Assistive Technology budget, a medical sheepskin rug can also qualify as a low-cost AT item. According to the NDIS, low-cost assistive technology is anything under $1,500, and most sheepskin rugs sit well under that. This pathway is more likely when an occupational therapist (OT) has recommended the rug as part of a care plan.

What "reasonable and necessary" means for a sheepskin rug

To be funded, the rug needs to meet the NDIS reasonable and necessary criteria. In plain terms, the NDIS asks five questions about any support before it agrees to fund it:

  • Does it relate to your disability?
  • Does it represent value for money?
  • Is it likely to be effective and beneficial?
  • Does it help with your goals, or your social and economic participation?
  • Is it something best funded by NDIS rather than another system or by family and community?

A medical sheepskin used for pressure care usually ticks each box. A written recommendation from your OT or GP, linking the rug to a specific need, makes the case clear at your plan review.

Support category When it applies Plan management types
Consumables (Core Supports) Everyday pressure care or comfort management Self-managed, plan-managed
Assistive Technology (Low Cost AT) OT has recommended it as part of a care plan Self-managed, plan-managed, agency-managed (with AT line item)

How to claim a sheepskin rug through NDIS

The process is straightforward once you know the steps. Here is what to do.

Step 1: Get an OT or GP recommendation in writing

Ask your OT, GP or specialist for a short written recommendation. It should link the rug to a disability-related need, such as pressure injury risk, fragile skin or positioning. A clear sentence or two is usually enough. This document does the heavy lifting in your claim, so it is worth getting it right.

Step 2: Talk to your Support Coordinator or planner

Share the recommendation with your Support Coordinator or NDIS planner. If you already have Consumables or AT budgets in your current plan, you may be able to use them right away. If not, raise it at your next plan review so the budget can be set aside.

Step 3: Request a supplier quote

You will need a quote from the supplier for your plan paperwork. We can provide a formal NDIS quote for any of our medical sheepskin rugs on request. Just let us know it is for an NDIS claim.

What documentation is typically needed

  • A written OT or GP recommendation linking the rug to your disability
  • A supplier quote or invoice (we can provide this)
  • Your NDIS participant number
  • Your plan start and end dates
  • Confirmation of the budget line in your plan (Consumables or AT)

If you are self-managed, you can buy the rug and submit the invoice through the NDIS myplace portal. If you are plan-managed, your plan manager pays the invoice once we send it through.

What to do if your claim is knocked back

Knocked-back claims usually come down to weak documentation, not the product itself. If the NDIS does not approve the rug, you can:

  • Ask the planner exactly why the request was refused. The reason guides the next step.
  • Ask your OT or GP to update the recommendation with more detail about the disability-related need.
  • Request a plan review or, if needed, an internal review of the decision.
  • If you are over 65 or do not qualify for NDIS, look at the other pathways below.

For a longer walk-through, our guide to claiming a sheepskin mattress topper through NDIS follows the same process in more detail.

Key takeaways

  • A medical sheepskin rug can be funded under Consumables or Assistive Technology (Low Cost AT).
  • A written OT or GP recommendation is the most important piece of paperwork. It links the rug to your disability.
  • Self-managed and plan-managed participants can buy through us. Agency-managed participants need a registered provider.
  • If a claim is knocked back, ask why, strengthen the recommendation, and request a review.

Other funding pathways if you are not on NDIS

The NDIS is for Australians under 65 with a permanent and significant disability. If you are over 65, or you do not qualify, you still have options.

  • Home Care Packages (My Aged Care). Package funds from Level 1 to Level 4 can be used for assistive products that help you stay independent at home. Ask your Home Care Package provider.
  • DVA funding for veterans. Veterans and war widows or widowers may be eligible through the Rehabilitation Appliances Program (RAP). Contact DVA on 1800 555 254 or visit dva.gov.au.
  • Private health insurance extras. Some funds cover pressure care or therapeutic aids. Check your policy or ring your fund.
  • Buying it yourself. If funding is not an option, our medical sheepskin products are available to buy directly.
