Yes, an over armchair table can be funded through NDIS or a Home Care Package, as long as it's recommended by an occupational therapist and meets the funding criteria. If you've already decided you need one, this guide walks you through how to claim it.
Not sure whether you qualify? Our companion post covers whether an over chair table is NDIS-funded in detail.

Getting an Over Armchair Table Through NDIS
An over armchair table is classified as assistive technology (AT) under the NDIS. For most people, it falls under the Consumables or Low-cost AT category — which means the process is simpler than you might think.

Step 1 — Check your NDIS plan budget category
Log in to the myplace portal and check which budget categories are active in your plan. An over armchair table typically falls under:
- Consumables — low-cost, off-the-shelf AT items (usually under $1,500)
- Assistive Technology — if your plan manager has listed it under this line
If it's listed as a low-cost AT item, you can purchase without a formal AT quote. If it sits under a higher AT support line, you'll need an OT assessment first. When in doubt, call the NDIS on 1800 800 110.
Step 2 — Request an OT assessment (and what to bring)
Even when an OT assessment isn't strictly required, having one makes the claim straightforward and reduces the chance of a rejection. Your GP or NDIS planner can refer you to an occupational therapist.
Bring the following to your appointment:
- Your NDIS plan or a summary of your current budget
- A description of your daily routine and what you need the table for (eating, reading, laptop use)
- Any relevant medical reports, such as post-surgical notes or a GP referral letter
- A photo or model number of the table you have in mind, if possible
The OT will assess whether the table is reasonable and necessary, then provide a written recommendation. That letter is what you (or your plan manager) use to process the claim.
Step 3 — Purchase by your plan management type
Agency-managed plans
You must purchase from a registered NDIS provider. Check with the retailer before you order, then submit the invoice through your myplace portal.
Plan-managed plans
Purchase from any supplier, then send the invoice to your plan manager. They claim the funds from the NDIS on your behalf.
Self-managed plans
Pay up front and claim reimbursement through the myplace portal. Keep your receipt and OT recommendation letter, and upload both with your claim.
Claiming Through a Home Care Package
If you're on a Home Care Package (HCP), an over armchair table can typically be funded as assistive technology, provided it supports your independence and daily living at home.

From 1 July 2025, Home Care Packages are transitioning to the Support at Home program. The process for claiming assistive technology stays much the same, but check with your provider about how the transition affects your current budget.
How to request an over chair table through aged care
- Contact your HCP provider. Ask whether an over armchair table can be funded from your package budget.
- Get an OT recommendation. Most providers require a written OT recommendation for assistive technology. Your provider can usually refer you, or arrange it through your GP.
- Get a quote. Send your provider the product details and price from the supplier.
- Provider arranges payment. Once approved, the provider pays the supplier directly from your package funds, or reimburses you if you've already purchased it.
The whole process usually takes one to three weeks.
What if your package doesn't cover the full cost?
If package funds are low, you've got a few options:
- Top up out of pocket. Most providers allow you to pay the difference yourself.
- Request a package reassessment. If your needs have increased, contact My Aged Care to move to a higher-level package.
- Choose a more affordable model. A basic height-adjustable over chair table for recliners starts from around $180 in Australia, comfortably within most package budgets.
What to Do If You're Self-Funded
Not everyone has NDIS or aged care funding. If you're purchasing out of pocket, here's what we recommend:

- Check whether you're eligible for future funding. If you're aged 65 or over, contact My Aged Care on 1800 200 422 to ask about a Home Care Package assessment. Starting the process now can save you money on future purchases.
- Talk to your GP. A referral to an OT is free under a Medicare Chronic Disease Management plan (up to five allied health visits per year). An OT recommendation can unlock future funding.
- Buy from a retailer with a clear returns policy. You want to be able to return the table if the fit or height isn't right.
